Hair Pieces, wigs, extensions and
surgery
While years ago, these remedies
to hair loss were much more crude, today, they are a viable
option for many people, often able to be implemented with a
minimum of fuss and resulting in a natural looking head of hair
to be proud of. There are several options to
explore:
Hair Pieces:
The modern hairpiece is quite a
work of art. Many people who suffer extreme hair loss, invest
in these as a good measure to instantly gain a great hair style
with minimum of fuss. There are many options avaiable at
different price levels to suit your desired outcome.
Options are either synthetic or
real hair, and the price varies accordingly. Many people will
opt for two hair pieces of the same style, so if one needs to
be maintained or becomes damaged or similar, they have a backup
ready to go with out any fuss or worry.
Real human hair pieces, tailored
to suit your style, will be in the vicinity of $600.00 each.
There is little to worry about regarding wearing and usage,
modern application techniques ensure you can wear the piece
worry free and live your life as normal without worrying about
it coming off, falling out or apart, or being noticed by
others.
Hair Extensions:
Extensions have gained so much
popularity in recent times that they are now a mainstream
offering for most hair salons and stylests. Hair preference for
usage is real human hair 'remy' is the name usually given for
this.
Most hair comes from India,
Russia or South America, and is value priced. Hair from Europe
tends to be better quality however will be substantially
dearer. Indian hair is very thick and strong and is usually
straight and can be cut, dyed, coloured and set to any desired
hair style. synthetic extensions are also available, and were
popular for years before human hair was mainstream.
However, synthetic hair never
really replicates the properties of real hair, and is now
regarded as a poor choice, however its price is low and thus it
is still attractive for some consumers.
Techniques for attaching hair
extensions are varied, and it is best to ensure you are aware
of all the alternatives before you commit to a technique, or
are forced into one by a pushy hair stylest.
Extensions come in what is
termed a 'weft' of hair, which is essentially a matched parcel
of hairs that will then form the basis of the procedure of
attatchment. Methods of attatchment include bonding, gluing,
weaving, braiding or using small anchors to attach
hair.
Extensions usually require at
least 3-4inches of hair to be successful and are also a viable
option for those with thin hair, as a medium to thicken hair to
cover bald or thin areas.
Extensions are an expensive
process, however if money is not an option, you will be very
impressed with the results! Expect to pay at least $500 for an
extensions job, which will require further on going maintenance
at around 3 month intervals, as hair grows out from under the
extensions.
Surgery:
Gone are the days when hair
implants resulted in a awful looking chequerboard scalp and
vicious sores that took weeks to heal! Modern surgery replaces
lost hair in a non offensive manner, with the least amount of
scalp damage possible. You will recieve hair roots that are
genetically disposed to be strong and resistant to DHT effects,
and will last your lifetime.
These are taken from the rear of
the scalp, and inserted under the hair loss effected areas to
thicken and disperse new growth where it is needed. Again, it
is not a cheap route, but modern techniques have made this
option all the more realistic for sufferes to
explore.
Hair
Thickners/Volumisers:
Some shampoos claim to have
thickening properties, and this is true to a certain extent.
What occurs is the hair shaft is opened along its length and
stimulated to obtain a larger girth.
This measure is temporary and
can lead to weakening of the hair over time, so is recommended
as an in-frequent measure for styling purposes or similar. In
addition, some powders available on the market can promote
thick hair, covering bald patches.
These are a 'shake on'
application and again, are not permanant, purely a cosmetic
option. However, if it makes you feel good for that special
night out, then its all the more worth it!
